One mother who didn't like the cover explains she was concerned about her 13-year-old son seeing it."I shredded it," said Gayle Ash, of Belton, Texas, in a telephone interview. "A breast is a breast - it's a sexual thing. He didn't need to see that."
Shredded the magazine? One would think that she was being asked to place Hustler on her coffee table instead of a picture of a cute baby and a side shot of a breast that looks more like an elbow than a "sexual" object that would ruin her teenage son. I imagine she burns books on the weekends.
However, my favorite is the woman who "totally" supports breastfeeding in public, but not the flashing,
The idea that breastfeeding mothers are running around flashing the masses is downright ridiculous. Never, no matter how enthusiastically I "whip" out my breast to feed one of my children have I shown a stranger my breast nor have I ever been flashed by a woman breastfeeding in public."I don't want my son or husband to accidentally see a breast they didn't want to see."
The only upside I can find to these arguments is that they are not as crazy as the one put forth by Ohio Rep. Bill Seitz that public breastfeeding could be hazardous due to "spillage, leakage, droppage..."
It saddens me that our culture sexualizes nearly every aspect of our lives. With so many unhealthy images in our culture, shouldn't a picture of a mother doing the best for her child be revered?
This is not sexual.
