Undeterred by the Enquirer endorsement for Jean Schmidt, Mr. S, Baby H, and I set out this afternoon to canvass for Paul Hackett. I did not expect the Enquirer to endorse a Democrat, but I was hoping that if they endorsed Schmidt they would at least have solid, sound reasons. As Ann Driscoll points out, the "paper does not read itself"
It was 91 degrees outside when we reached the Old Kerry headquarters so everyone was set up inside. There was no big rally; today it was all about work. There were 20 or so people there when we arrived and more came as we were leaving. We encountered dog #1 at the building. An elderly woman brought her adorable and friendly little dog with her to work the phone bank. Children and pets are welcome to "work for Hackett".
We signed up to do our neighborhood. Since we knew the area, we decided to do 4 districts instead of 1. This made for a long day, but it was productive. We started out in the car due to the heat and hit all of the houses that were further apart. After lunch, we set out in the car again. Along the way, we talked to many people. Everyone was so positive about Paul Hackett's campaign and feel that he has a real chance of winning this race.
After dinner and another round of diaper changing, we set out on foot to canvass the houses in our immediate neighborhood. Baby H, the unofficial president of the "Babies for Hackett" group was a smashing hit in her Hackett for Congress hat that we made. (She later tore up and ate the sticker, so I do not have a picture)
I discovered a few things about my neighborhood today. They are more Democrats than I realized, many Republicans ready for a change in Ohio, and tons of dogs (plus, a few cats, but Mr. S would not let me lure them to our car). I had a golden retriever jump on my shoulders and kiss my face, little dogs that made me fear for my ankles, one dog that growled and guarded the door (no door hanger left at that house), a lovely old setter and the best being an Irish Wolfhound named Bubbles. I had never seen this breed in person. All I can say is, "wow". Those dogs are gigantic and extremely friendly.
8 hours later, Baby H and I are back home. She is asleep and I am blogging. Mr. S went to turn in our paperwork. It was a long day, but worth every minute of our time because Paul Hackett is a candidate worth supporting.
In 2 days the election will be over. I certainly hope that the 2nd district is able to celebrate Paul Hackett's victory.
